How long do the GeoPlanters last?
The longevity of the GeoPlanter varies depending on usage and how each user cares for the fabric. Under normal usage, our GeoPlanters can last upwards of five years. If the fabric is agitated more often, i.e. with frequent washing, the fabric may deteriorate faster and we would recommend replacing after three years.
Will I have to water these more often because they are more porous?
“Always remember that the most important air that your root zone can be supplied with comes from adequate drainage of the medium. It is fundamental to understand that during the night for outdoor gardens, the top third of the root zone consumes oxygen from the roots surroundings not the nutrient solution…While good water retention is important in a system in which less irrigation is desired, so is good drainage important in order to maintain adequate oxygen movement within the medium” – David Robinson, The Grower’s Handbook.
Poor drainage will cause root rot which is a condition found in both indoor and outdoor plants, although more common in indoor plants with poor drainage. Usually, this is a result of over-watering. In both indoor and outdoor plants, it is usually lethal and there is no effective treatment. The excess water makes it very difficult for the roots to get the air that they need, causing them to decay. To avoid root rot, it is best to only water plants when the soil becomes dry, and to put the plant in a well-drained pot.
What are your GeoPlanters made of?
The GeoPlanter is made of a UV Stabilized geo-textile polypropylene fiber that is heat bonded on one side. It is BPA free and safe for organic gardening and will last about 2-3 years even with periodical machine washes. You can wash your pots with either Oxyclean or peroxide to sterilize if necessary, or simply turn inside out and wash out with a hose or pressure washer. It works extremely well in removing any build up residue without leaving behind and residue itself.
How does one wash or sterilize their Geoplanters between uses?
Start by cleaning out your GeoPlanter of all dirt or medium thoroughly with shop-vac or by hand. Wash out with either warm OR cold water either by hand, in a washer, with a power wash, or a hose is just fine. Use either Oxyclean or a peroxide mixture to sterilize, which will leave behind little to no residue or harsh perfumes after you are all done. Let air dry (do not use a dryer as it will melt the fabric) and store away for next season.
Can I place my GeoPlanter directly on soil or grass or do I need a liner?
Absolutely. Our only note is that the GeoPlanter fabric is very porous so the roots will grow directly through if they are placed on the ground / soil / grass. Also, if your GeoPlanters are spaced too close together, the roots will also grow through the material to the next pot. Make sure to give your garden plenty of space for growth.
Are these safe to use for organic gardening?
Yes, we used closed cell technology for our UV stabilization process. GeoPlanters are BPA free and totally safe for certified organic gardens.
What kind of plants can I grow in my GeoPlanter?
Anything! GeoPlanters work great for fruits, veggies, and herbs including strawberries, squash, zucchini, basil, jalapeños, succulents, cilantro, and even aquatic plants.
I grow indoors and I use a flood and drain system, could I use GeoPlanters?
GeoPlanters are perfect for using indoor, for flood and drain or drain to waste systems. Our 3’ x 3’, 3’ x 6’, 4’ x 4’, and 4’ x 8’ GeoPlanters fit perfectly in flood tables.
